Impact of Information and Communication Technology on Library Service Delivery in Federal University Libraries Oye-Ekiti
Abstract
Background: This study examined the impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on library service delivery at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE). Libraries play a central role in supporting teaching, research, and learning, but many Nigerian academic libraries face constraints such as inadequate infrastructure, funding, and skills.
Method: A descriptive survey design was adopted, targeting all 46 library personnel at FUOYE. Using a structured and pretested questionnaire, data were collected from 44 valid respondents (95.7% response rate) and analyzed using descriptive statistics.
Findings/Results: Findings revealed that key library services such as collection development, user education, reference support, cataloguing, and document delivery were delivered at a high level. Similarly, ICT use among staff was substantial, particularly in online reference services, social media outreach, automation, digital signage, and remote access tools. However, areas such as interlibrary loan and access to electronic resources recorded lower performance.
Implications: The results imply that while ICT adoption has improved efficiency and accessibility, gaps remain in infrastructure, advanced ICT utilization, and user support services.
Conclusion: The study concludes that ICT has positively influenced library service delivery at FUOYE but requires continuous investment and training to sustain progress.
Recommendations The study recommends staff capacity building in emerging technologies, improved collection management systems, and stronger institutional support for ICT infrastructure should be given priority by the university management
