Librarians Competencies in Information Accessibility Evaluation Usage and Service Quality in Northeast Federal University Libraries Nigeria

Abstract

Libraries prioritize service quality by meeting users information needs with librarians information literacy skills significantly influencing the quality of services they deliver. The study investigated the relationship between librarians information literacy competencies and service quality in Northeast Federal University Libraries Nigeria with emphasis was on information access evaluation and use competencies. A descriptive survey design was adopted data was collected from 63 academic librarians from three federal universities in northeast Nigeria through enumeration technique. Descriptive and simple multiple regression through SPSS-23 was used to analyse the data. It was revealed that service quality in the libraries in the study areas was high also the extent of relationship between librarians information access and use competency and service quality were high while information evaluation was moderate. However there was no significant relationship between librarians access evaluation and use competency and service quality. In the libraries studied service quality was generally high the relationship between access use of information and service quality was to a high extent while evaluation was moderate. However they were not statistically significant. University libraries need improved information literacy instruction and skilled librarians to enhance services requiring additional training to improve their competencies and adapt to evolving information lands.
