Abstract

This study examined the prospects and challenges facing artificial intelligence technologies in academic libraries in North East Nigeria. Two research questions guided the study. The population consisted of all the 2354 library staff of libraries in the three Federal Universities in North East Nigeria. These universities are the University of Maiduguri Modibo Adama University of Technology and Abubakar Tafar Balewa University Bauchi. The objectives of the study are to determine the prospects of artificial intelligence technologies and examine their challenges. The study adopted the Yaro Yamane 1964 formula to obtain the sample size of 500 library staff. The descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions. Any mean score below the 2.50 threshold was rated disagreed while mean scores with 2.50 were rated agreed. The findings in research question one revealed that respondents agreed with the prospects of artificial intelligence technologies in academic libraries in North East Nigeria. It means they share a common positive outlook on the potential benefits and opportunities that AI can bring to their libraries in that specific region. The finding also revealed that respondents agreed on the challenges facing artificial intelligence technologies in academic libraries. Based on the findings of the study it was recommended amongst others that libraries in North East Nigeria should explore collaboration with academic and research institutions as well as international organizations to pool resources and knowledge for AI adoption. Collaborative efforts can help address financial and infrastructure constraints.rn
